Oh, this student did the thing which makes me feel worst when grading: the “cross out the correct answer and write an incorrect one” mistake.

Also, I think that answer would make a great “8 word sci-fi story”.

They write their “i” in a way that seems like it would be slow

I hate when this happens! Changing the right answer to a wrong answer :(

I wonder if her mechanic appreciates that.

Thats an awesome answer!

So, is the proper one “My mechanic always checks my oil”?

I always tell them to follow their gut instinct and that the first answer is usually the correct one. Doesn’t help. I’ve stood next to students who spent the last few minutes of an exam crossing out correct answers and replacing them with BS. Nothing you can do.

I would have prefered “checks the oil”. ;)

How old are the students?

When I went to Germany, all the 15-through-18-year-olds I hung out with were so adorable with their English. One of the other Americans said that she didn’t eat meat, and one of the German kids said, “Oh, so you are a vegetable.”

Does that always work? In my experience some people just have a very poor ‘gut instinct’ when it comes to a foreign language. In high school English class I was frequently amazed what some of the kids came up with. Kids who are now doctors and the like (it was similar to the German Gymnasium), so they were far from stupid. They just lacked a feel for language.

Nope, it doesn’t work. They then start to cross out correct answers anyway. I just see more crossed out/corrected wrong answers than corrections that actually did it.

This is from a 9th grade test, but I had an 8th grader do the same mistake you mentioned. I played an introduction game with them and he told me that he is a vegetable. The other kids in his class were dying from laughter.

Still, while they do make funny mistakes from time to time, they can have a conversation in English. How good is your German?

It’s decent enough that you could drop me in the middle of Germany and I’d get by just fine, even without just asking people if they speak English. But yeah, it’s pretty impressive how virtually everyone in Europe is bilingual. I really wish I even had the option to take a language course as young as they start.

Wouldn’t that be the job of the mechanic’s husband?
